Learn moreThe Rebound program, supported by Barclays, uses basketball helps to combat youth un- and underemployment, teaches financial literacy, and offers professional development. Since 2014, Barclays has supported nonprofit organisation Good Shepherd Services to help tackle challenges faced by many of New York City families.
Through Rebound, Barclays provides the tangible support that young adults need to enter and contribute to the workforce. Rebound teaches basic financial skills, hosts employment workshops, provides one-on-one mentoring, and builds out personal development plans with participating 17 to 24-year-olds through basketball. The programme focusses on East New York a Brooklyn neighborhood particularly affected by youth unemployment. In this community, the unemployment rate is higher than the average rate of unemployment across New York City.
Each year, volunteers from Barclays participate in mock interviews with Rebound participants, helping them to hone their soft skills and build the confidence needed to successfully interview for job opportunities. After the mock interviews, Barclays colleagues and young people from Rebound take to the court for a fun basketball competition.
Andrew and Leyda are two recent Rebound participants and are just a few of the program’s success stories. Hailing from East New York, Andrew was introduced to a multitude of opportunities to learn new skills during his time in the programme. Through Rebound, he successfully volunteered in middle schools, interned at WBAI 99.5 radio station, and even scored an interview with Delta Airlines in which he is presently employed. Thanks in part to the skills taught to him through Rebound, the now 21-year-old, has big career plans in the tech industry.
One of the key components of Rebound is the community it cultivates between participants and staff. Originally part of a 2019 cohort, Sunset Park native Leyda took some time away but ultimately decided to return. She shared, “I needed the emotional support to get motivated again. I was welcomed back with such open arms.” She graduated the program once again in 2022 and left the program motivated to become a leader in her community in the way that her Rebound mentors were to her. She aspires to eventually become an inspirational speaker to help those who are in need of an extra push like the one Rebound and Barclays gave her.
Good Shepherd Services provides a wide range of services to youth, young adults, and families with counseling, crisis intervention, resource referrals, academic tutoring, college preparation, career exploration, job development and placement.
